Use Skype Lite for all of your Telephony Needs in Windows
Many people around the world are using Skype these days to make free audio and video calls to their friends, colleagues and family members having a computer. Skype also offers phone calls to any land line or mobile phone from around the world on a very low rate. Newer versions offers video conferencing facility as well. These days Skype enabled phones are also available that may be appealing for the people on the go.But the problem for many people using Skype is that application installs some extra nuisances along with the main Skype application that not every body needs. As an example latest version installs a Google toolbar(can be excluded from installation during setup), IE explorer plugin,Mozilla plugin, enables the autorun on startup of Windows and also sets Skype as the homepage. These extra features(read annoyances) installed by the Skype are not needed by most of us.
Skype Lite is an optimized and repackaged installer of Skype that removes these nuisances for us from the official installer and it is also silent and unattended that means no user intervention is needed during installation. By default it will install to the %PROGRAMFILES% Skype folder where %PROGRAMFILES% environment variable specifies the currently set Program Files folder. Another advantage to using this lite version of Skype is the installer size which only weighs in at 12.7 MB(for Skype 3.6) while the official installer that you will download from the Skype website is over 21 MB in size! A 40% reduction is achieved by removing the extra crapware.A complete list of all the modifications that are made to the original installer are as follows:
- No toolbar installation
- Remove IE plugin
- Remove Mozilla plugin
- Remove autorun on boot
- Remove desktop shortcut
- Change advertised shortcut to common shortcut in start menu
- Doesn’t change the homepage to skype
You can download the Skype Lite from here.
