Nero Burning ROM (a part of Nero application suite) is considered to be the de facto standard when it comes to CD/DVD burning, disk image creation and CD/DVD video disk creation. It supports a large amount of features including a CD/DVD compilation wizard that will guide the user through the whole process that may be suitable for the beginners. Despite it’s rich feature set this software is not for free. So if you are looking for viable freeware alternative then luckily you have some options available these days.
Today I want to introduce you a very good alternative to Nero Burning ROM that supports all the key features of the Nero application but is available for free. The applications that I am referring to is called Infra Recorder and is very easy to use but despite it’s simplicity supports all the key features that you can expect from such an application. Some of the features are listed below.
-
Create custom data, music and mixed-mode projects and record them to physical compact discs or disc images.
-
Create and record disc images.
-
Create direct disc copies, on the fly or by using a temporary disc image.
-
Erase (blank) rewrite-able discs using four different methods.
-
Import session data from multi-session discs and append more sessions to that kind of discs.
-
Fixate discs (write lead-out information to prevent further data from being added to the disc).
-
Scan the SCSI/IDE bus for devices and collect detailed information about their capabilities.
-
Display detailed disc information.
-
Read and save audio and data tracks to files (wav. and .iso)
-
Scan selected tracks for errors.
It supports shell extensions as well and you can record saved projects and images from the Windows explorer. CD/DVD compilation interface is similar to the Nero Burning ROM and the top pane shows the file explorer while the bottom pane shows layout of the files & folders on the CD/DVD you are going to compile. The light blue bar at the bottom is showing that how much space you have filled out of the total capacity of the CD/DVD disk that you are going to compile. You can directly drag & drop files and folders in the CD layout pane to add to the CD compilation if desired.
My personal experience with this application is good and I occasionally use it when I need to burn some data DVDs.To summarize the review, Infra Recorder is a simple and easy to use application for CD/DVD burning that supports almost all the essential features that a normal user will require from such an application.

I like Infra as well, but it has been replaced as my favorite burning freeware by BurnAware Free from http://www.glorylogic.com/
