These days online video sharing sites are exploding in popularity particularly after the success of the YouTube. Other public video sharing sites are trying to capitalize on this new medium. There is a large set of utilities available for Windows these days that will allow you download the videos from these video sharing sites including Youtube. Aside from these utilities you can also use some specialized extensions for the Firefox to download the video files in case you are a Firefox user. But the problem is that there are not many video download utilities that will allow you to download the video files from all the video sharing sites and secondly what if you want to download streaming media files(other then flv) such as audio songs(*.mp3,*.wma,*.ra etc.) or flash files (*.swf) from a site? You can use a media downloading/capturing utility called Grab++ to catch and download all of these types of media. Grab++ is a media file download module for the excellent file downloader called Orbit.
After discovering and using it for sometime I have uninstalled all other utilities that I had installed over the time for video and music downloading including the extensions for the Firefox. I have personally tried it over a dozen different public video sharing websites including YouTube, MetaCafe, Google Video and many other websites and it worked flawlessly. To use it for downloading multimedia files is pretty easy. Just follow the simple procedure given below:
Step 1. Launch the Orbit downloader.
Step 2. Launch the Grab++ module by selecting the Grab++ option from the tray bar icon of the Orbit downloader. Please don’t forget to do this before actually launching the webpage with the actual video file you want to capture.
Step 3. Now launch the page in your web browser from which you want to capture a media file(any audio or video file not just FLV).
Step 4. Play the video file if it has not started to play automatically.
Step 5. Now you should be able to see the played file listed in the Grab++ window. In case multiple files have appeared in the view you can identify the required file using the larger size as compared to the other helper files that appear in the Grab++ capture window. Also in many cases the actual audio/video(that you want to download) will have a meaningful name detected by Grab++ from the web page title.
Step 6. Now you just have to simply hit the download button after selecting the required file and it will add the file to the Orbit downloader to download.
As an added bonus your video files will download at much faster speed because of the segmented downloading technology that Orbit downlaoder employs for downloading files. As you can see from the procedure actual purpose to launch the page with media file and play it is just to force it to appear in the Grab++ capture window so that we can download the file, so it is entirely possible to launch and play all the desired media files and then downloading all of them in one go from the Grab++ capture window by selecting all of them in the capture window. You can filter the display in the Grab++ capture windows to show only the music, video or flash files.
Other features and customizations that are offered are as follows:
- Supports the flv, avi, mpg, mpeg,qt,asf, mov, wmv,rm formats for downloading the video files.
- Supports the mp3,midi,wma,wav,rm,ra,flv,rbs formats for downloading the music files.
- Supports swf flash files downloading.
- Supports renaming files by the web page title(it can really come handy when downloading files from YouTube because no one likes those ‘get_video.flv’ like cryptic names).
- User can set the minimum size for the file to appear in the capture window.
- Grab++ module is web browser independent so you can use any web browser to launch the webpage with the media file and start the playback.
As you can see, you can use it to download almost any media file you want.I am using Grab++ module to download videos and streaming music from the web for quite some time now and since then it has not disappointed even a single time. You can download the Orbit (Grab++ module is integrated) from the official website.

i also know powerful software. MelodyCan save YouTube files, converts to any suitable format. Also it converts audio from video. Install the trial version from http://www.convert-any-media.com/ and go to your Internet Explorer. All you need is to load Youtube page with a video clip and click on “Save Youtube video” button or something like that.. and the clip will be saved to the desired location :))
