View Your Most Visited Websites Automatically in a New Tab or as Firefox Home Page!

There are number of Firefox extensions available  if you want to customize the home page screen of your Firefox installation and load your favorite bookmarks for example there. Some well known examples are Speed Dial and Fast Dial. Both of these extensions allows you to add your favorite or most visited websites in a home page where these websites are listed as a grid of thumbnails of the chosen websites and you just need to click on the thumbnail to go to a specific website. This mechanism is good if your bookmarks list is relatively static otherwise you will have to manual add newly favorite websites manually as your bookmark list grows. Wouldn’t it be great if some extension observes your most visited websites and automatically adds these to homepage from where you can launch them?

Auto Dial is a Firefox extension that exactly does this! You don’t need to manually add any bookmark to the homepage but it will populate your Firefox homepage with the most visited websites based on your browsing habits and from there you can launch them in new tabs by just a middle-click of a mouse button. It is convenient in the sense that this list will be automatically adjusted if your browsing habits change and you visit some other websites more often in the future. Please note that only links to your most websites are shown with the associated icons but no thumbnails. In my case it is good because no thumbnails means they can accommodate much  more links in the same space of the home page. You can also press Ctrl+T to access the most visited webpages in a new tab.

There is only one caveat as I can see that currently there is no way to add your own custom bookmarks in the generated page. This addition would make it perfect I think. I have tested this extension with Firefox 4.0 b8pre and it is working perfectly! However you might need to install the Add-on Compatibility Reporter extension to force compatibility. You can download it here.
