Microsoft Visio is one of the most popular dedicated software to create diagrams, UML diagrams, entity relationship diagrams, network diagrams and flowcharts etc. However it is a commercial software that is not available for free.

Dia | Dia A Freeware Alternative to MS Visio to Create Network Diagrams, Flowcharts etc.

Dia is a freeware alternative to the Visio that has many of the capabilities of the MS Visio and can be used to achieve the same results as MS Visio if used creatively for creating network diagrams, flowcharts and many other kind of network diagrams. It supports many popular formats for diagrams import and export such as EPS, PNG, WMF and SVG formats. New shapes can be added by writing XML files. Main GUI and workflow for creating new diagrams is not that much different from the Visio. Other notable features include multipage printing of the diagrams. Versions of the Dia are available for the MS Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. There is a large variety of use cases for the Dia including creating flowcharts for a computer program to show the control flow, creating network topology diagrams, UML diagram, creating electrical circuit diagrams and hierarchical organization charts etc.

Latest Windows version of the Dia can be downloaded from here. A portable version of the software is also available here.

Does Dia import files from Microsoft Visio? I’ve only found one program that does – http://www.lucidchart.com – which does it quite well but I’m always on the lookout for good software, especially when it’s free!

Unfortunately it doesn’t import Visio files apparently.
