Normally in Firefox if mouse is hovered over the Forward or Backward buttons in the toolbar there is a tooltip text that is shown but unfortunately it is not very useful. A much more useful approach could be to show the visual preview of the webpage that will load in the current tab if you DO hit the forward/backward button. This feature is not present in any version of the Firefox but there is a Firefox extension serving exactly this purpose.
Back/Forward Thumbnail extension for the Firefox shows thumbnail previews whenever mouse cursor is hovered over the toolbar buttons of the Forward/Backward buttons. So you know in advance that which page will appear on screen if Forward or Backward button is clicked. Note that this extension is also compatible with the Rewind/Fast Forward Buttons – an other very useful extension for Firefox from the same developer.
Do note that latest version of the Back/Forward Thumbnail has dropped support for the Firefox 3.0 and older versions! However, it is fully compatible with the latest Firefox 4.0 betas.
