Bad news for PSP fans, Sony has confirmed today that even though they were considering 3D for their next generation portable console, NGP or the PSP 2 will not have a 3D screen. This will come as a disappointment to Sony fans since Nintendo’s new 3DS system will feature a 3D screen not requiring any glasses or special equipment. This is especially surprising considering that Sony is one of the pioneer companies which pushed for 3D experience via updating the Blu-Ray player on PS3 and their home LCD lineup.
Sony thinks that the only place for 3D at this time is in the home entertainment setting rather than portable gaming. In an interview, SCEE says "We view 3D as having the greatest potential, in the near term, in what I would call a dedicated entertainment environment."
They later on said that even though they thought of 3D for NGP at first, the idea was scrapped "After careful consideration of our goal of offering users the ultimate portable entertainment experience with a revolutionary user interface we have decided to focus on the features and specs announced today first."
Well it remains to be seen how this decision will turn out for Sony, as the glasses-free Nintendo 3DS is set for release in March this year and is already on the top of many gamers shopping list. Will this situation turn out like Sony MOVE, where Sony ended up replicating Nintendo’s hugely success Wii, we will have to wait to see who wins the PSP2 vs 3DS war.
