In this ongoing iOS vs Android war, where Apple has clearly established its superiority in the gaming platform, Android is still catching up. However, it does not mean that Google’s open source OS is without its own share of fun games. Here I unveil my favorite top ten casual android games. This selection of top games is mostly based around casual games which can be played for a couple of minutes while you are travelling in train, waiting for a class to start and so on. And best of all, I have only selected free apps from the Android Market so that they can enjoyed by everyone. Well without further ado, here they are – The Top Ten best casual Android games:
This is a very simple game, where the sole purpose is to drop a ball down through various obstacles. You navigate the ball using the phone’s gyroscopic control (in simple words – tilting your phone left and right to control the ball). Some people can criticize that there is only a single mode, but hey, that’s why it is on the casual games list.
9. Ninja Kaka
Mindless fun. That is how I would describe Ninja kaka. There is no greater joy that having fruits thrown high up and then use your finger to cut across them. While there are various iterations of this formula, this one appears to be the most smooth running.
8. Bonsai Blast
If you have played Zuma on the PC, you would quickly understand what Bonsai Blast is. Basically using the touch screen to fire balls around the screen to match three of them. If you liked Zuma, you will love Bonsai Blast.
7. Brain Genius Deluxe
There is an excess of brain training games on various portable platforms, so why would you think that Android would be left behind. This is essentially a game to exercise your brain, as you play different mini games which test your reflexes, judgment and logical skills. No better way to sharpen your brain than a good 3 minute run of Brain Genius Deluxe every morning – or that’s what the makers of this game want you to believe. But who cares, its fun !!
Another brain teaser. You shoot a trajectory from your ship and need to get it across the screen. There are obstacles in your way and there are also different shapes which can be placed on the map to alter the course of trajectory and get around the obstacles. Definitely worth a try !
Basically another one of the Bejeweled clones. But beware, it is one of the best ones and probably better than Bejeweled in the first place. Familiar theme – move around jewels to match 3 in a line. Sounds boring and old, but it is hard to put this one down once you start it.
Move puzzles pieces around a board to get one across. This game features clean and straightforward graphics, with a very neat and responsive gameplay. Perfect game, if you wanna solve a simple puzzle in 30 secs while you wait for someone in an office. This game needs to be played first before its simplistic and addictive nature can be appreciated.
3. Arcade by Kongregate
Arcade by Kongregate could very well be your favorite Android game and it may also be the only game that you need on your phone. It is basically an online website with collection of hundreds of different flash based games and they have recently released their android version of the app. If you like playing flash based games to kill time in the office, this may be the best thing after donuts and coffee. There is a very extensive catalogue of games with wide variation in quality. Nevertheless, if you like trying new flash games every now and then, Kongregate will entertain you for a long time.
2. Slice it!
Very rarely, you come across such a original and artistic game, that makes one really laud its developers. For people who like to procrastinate at lot, like how you can draw lines across a rectangle to divide into perfectly symmetric squares, this is the game for you. The basic premise of this game is that you need to draw lines across various figures to divide them into smaller figures with equal area. Wait, does this description sound too boring, hmm, then may be you need to give it a try before you appreciate the ingenuity of this app.
1. Angry Birds
Unless you have been living in a cave or under a rock, you must have heard about Angry Birds. Developed by Finland based Rovio Mobile, Angry birds has been a huge access. On Android alone, it generates a million dollar every month from the advertising which appears in the free version on Android. This is on top of the massive revenues it has generated from other platforms. Launching some angry birds to topple down green colored hungo mungo monsters has been so much fun, that Rovio has already released “Angry Birds Season” adding extra levels and a brand new holiday themed experience. Definitely a must have for every Android device owner.
That is it folks. Given that there are hundreds of apps and free games available on Android, this list is by no means exhaustive and there are a number of very good and decent games who did not make it to this list. Also this list does not contain paid apps or games with advanced graphics or games requiring a lot of time investment. And in case you are wondering what those codes are, search the Market for Barcode scanner and then you can use your phone’s camera to scan these codes which will link you directly to home page of the app on Market.
