nookcolor | How to Watch Videos in High Quality on Your Nook Color ?

Although, Nook Color from Barnes & Noble is traditionally just a colorful EBook reader and indeed this is it’s primary purpose. However, that is not all there is more to Nook. Few people know that Nook Color has the PowerVR SGX530 graphics under the hood, which is pretty powerful. In fact, it is the same chip that is to be found in the Droid 2 and Droid X! Although, you can play many video formats on your Nook Color but many of them will play in reduced quality because of the lack of the hardware support, and need to be decoded in pure software. However, much better video output can be gained if a format that has a native hardware decoding support on the Nook Color. This is exactly what can be achieved if you encode your video on the PC in the MP4 video format using the H.264 encoding with basic profile. You can use the excellent Handbrake that we reviewed some time ago to do the video encoding. Alternatively just use the following command on the the command-line to get the desired video encoded using FFMPEG encoder.

ffmpeg -y -threads 8 -i myvideo.avi -b 800k -bt 1000k -vcodec libx264 -vpre default -vpre baseline -acodec libfaac -ac 2 -ar 44100 -ab 128k mynewvideo.mp4

Actually, you can use any video convertor of your choice but don’t forget that the H.264 profile that you use is set to base-level (or "base"). Anything higher will not be played by the nook without frame skipping.

Ah! and don’t forget to try our other related guides for example, running Android Honeycomb 3.0 on your Nook Color. For how to make bootable SD card for Nook Color running Honeycomb guide click here. If you are planning to root your Nook color device all versions please click here.
