iOS52 | Jailbreak iOS 5 On iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad & iPod Touch Using Redsn0w 0.9.8 [Guide]These days all the buzz is about the shiny new iOS 5 revealed by Apple at WWDC 2011 a couple of days back. Judging just by the number of new features cooked in to it, it seem to be the single largest iOS update ever! Earlier we bought you a guide on How to Install iOS 5 Beta on the iPhone Without Any Apple Dev Account! Now only days after, iPhone Dev-Team was not only able to jailbreak the iOS 5 on the iDevices and demonstrate it on the iPod Touch 4th Gen, but now they have also released an updated version of the Redsn0w 0.9.8, that allows to everyone to jailbreak their iDevice on iOS 5! And we bring you a step-by-step guide to achieve the JB on your iDevice.

Here is the compatibility list of the Redsn0w 0.9.8:

  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • iPhone3GS
  • iPhone4 (GSM)
  • iPhone4 (CDMA)

Now before we go any further please make sure that you read and understand the notes/warnings below from iPhone Dev-Team!

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS!  You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS!  There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps.  (Seriously!)

THIS REDSN0W WILL NOT HACTIVATE 5.0b1!  You need to be an iOS developer with a registered UDID to get past all the new activation screens.  PLEASE DON’T PIRATE APPLE SOFTWARE!  Only registered devs with Macs can develop iOS applications, and only those people will have legitimate access to the beta IPSWs.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY!  No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost.  You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now”  to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari.  If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

IF YOU HAVE THE 06.15 BASEBAND ON YOUR 3GS…this redsn0w will get you past the iTunes restore error you’ll get when using the stock IPSW (nobody other than those with the 06.15 baseband should be going anywhere near the stock IPSW!).

There is a lot of important information above. First and foremost this is only a tethered jailbreak solution! Furthermore, please stay away if you are relying on the carrier unlock for your iDevice. Finally, this is only meant to be for the developers as for now there are just too many broken components to be really useful.

Warning: Rooting, Jailbreaking or customizing your device can be risky, and you may end-up bricking your device! Follow the instructions posted here at your own responsibility as InspiredGeek will not be responsible for any damage to your device.

Note: Please stay away from this method if your phone is dependent on a carrier unlock!

Now follow these instructions:

Programs required:

  • Redsn0w 0.9.8 (Mac Only!)
  • Access to stock iOS 5 firmware (you can download it from the Apple iOS dev center)
  • iTunes 10.5 beta (it can be downloaded from Apple iOS dev center)

Step 1: First download the iOS 5 FW for your specific iDevice.

Step 2: Update/Restore to iOS 5 FW using the IPSW file you just downloaded in iTunes.

Step 3: Download the Redsn0w 0.9.8 and save it to the desktop. Extract the Redsn0w application there in a folder on the desktop.

Step 4: Execute RedSn0w application from there that was extracted earlier.
Step 5: Once RedSn0w appears click the Browse button. Then browse the iOS 5 stock FW that is downloaded in Step 1 and open it.

Step 6: Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step 7: RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.
Step 8: From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.
- Make sure Cydia is selected.
Step 9: Now plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button.
Step 10: RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds. Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
Step 11: RedSn0w will then do it’s processing and you will be notified when RedSn0w it is done. Click the Finish button. When your iDevice finishes after rebooting it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard!

Enjoy! now you have a tethered jailbroken iDevice on iOS 5!

Note that if you want to boot the device, you must use the tethered boot option in the Redsn0w for that.
