These days there is a lot of buzz about the upcoming Android 2.3/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich release from Google by the year end. Ice Cream Sandwich is actually the code name for the next generation of the Android (after Honeycomb) for those who don’t know. There are a lot of aspects about the OS that are not very clear at this moment in time. But at least there there are some key facts told to us by Google about Android 2.3/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. What we know for sure is that its the OS that according to Google will unify the codebase both for the small screen mobile device and large screen tablet OS. In other words not co-existence of Honeycomb and Gingerbread, but only one Ice Cream Sandwich to rule them all!
It is expected to include much more more optimizations for multicore/dual-core processors as in the future we will see more and more of the handsets based on multiple processors. Google also promised that Android 2.3/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be open source! This is particularly good news for all the community for custom ROM development. This is unlike the Honeycomb for which Google never released the source code. Kernel will be based on the recently released Linux 3.0 kernel.
Android 2.3/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is also expected include an all new built-in theme engine and a new Apple Game Centre competitor! There are also many enhancements expected for the Camera application. One of the most exciting tidbits relates to the performance of the Android 2.3/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as compared to the Android Honeycomb. As AndroidandMe reports Android 2.3/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to be 1.8X faster than than its older sibling! Although, there is not any clarification that which aspects of the system will be this much faster. As for the version number for the Ice Cream Sandwich – it seems Google hasn’t decided on to it yet, and there are debates about if it will be something 2.X or Android 4.0. Although, we have strong feeling that an update of this magnitude will likely be called Android 4.0.
Speaking of performance increases, one of our sources told us Ice Cream Sandwich is up to 1.8x faster than Honeycomb. They didn’t provide any other details, so we don’t know if this refers to browser, GPU, or overall system performance. For all we know, they could have been talking about performance gains from the latest hardware.
Best of all it seems that many older devices may also be supported as there are not any specific requirements that can prevent Android 4.0 to run on those devices. However, Nexus One and Nexus S will be the first devices to support the Android 2.3/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Its expected that upcoming Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3) will also utilize the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as we mentioned recently.
