We have been hearing a lot about the NVIDIA Tegra 3 SOC for quite some time now. NVIDIA has managed to generate a lot of hype around the possible performance prospects of its upcoming high-end processor. Of course, the main pitching point form NVIDIA is about the quad core capability of the processor, and as much as 5X performance increment as compared to the current Tegra 2 processors which had BTW became very popular, and also is integrated in countless recent smartphones and tablets from different Android hardware vendors released this year. Forbes has recently reported based on an interview with the NVIDIA CEO that we might actually see first Tegra 3 (Kal-El) based tablets before the year end. This will put the Tegra 3 integration in new generation of quad core tablets before the new upcoming smartphones based on the said processor.
Of course, NVIDIA will have to face a stiff competition in the market from the QUALCOMM which is one of the more experienced players in this market as compared to NVIDIA . This is because QUALCOMM will also be pumping out its own flavored quad core processors targeted at the smartphone and tablet market during the same time frame. Its hard to predict at this time how this competition will turn out to be. Its also quite possible for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3 (SIII) to be powered by the Tegra 3 (Kal-El), based on some rumors.
Here are some of the specs that are known so far about the Tegra 3 (Kal-El):
- Processor: Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore, up to 1.5 GHz
- 12-Core Nvidia GPU with support for 3D stereo
- Ultra Low Power GPU mode
- 40 nm by TSMC
- Video output up to 2560×1600
- NEON instruction sets from ARM
- 1080p H.264 High Profile video decode
- The Kal-El chip (CPU and GPU) is to be about 5 times faster than Tegra 2
As you can see from the above specs Tegra 3 will be based on the Cortex-A9 with a clock frequency of up to 1.5 GHz, capable of driving very high resolution displays courtesy of significantly more powerful GPU, and in general its believed that Tegra 3 will be up to 5X faster than the current generation Tegra 2.
Its also expected that upcoming new ASUS Eee Pad Transformer will feature the quad core muscle via the integration of Tegra 3. In addition, its rumored that upcoming Amazon 10.1-inch tablet may also feature the Tegra 3. How about a cheap Android tablet featuring Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 (ICS4) and a hardware based on the very potent Tegra 3 processor? – all before the year end! Well, we will just have to wait and see…
