pwnage tool | Jailbreak & Preserve iOS 5 Baseband by Creating Custom IPSW Firmware Using Redsn0w 0.99b5 [Guide For iPhone 4/3GS]It was just yesterday that we reported that a new up updated beta version of the Redsn0w is imminent in the near future as mentioned by the iPhone-Dev team that will allow to preserve the baseband of your iPhone when upgrading your iOS device to iOS 5 by creating custom iOS 5 firmware. And this happened today that we have the new release of the Redsn0w 0.99b5 that is much updated and supports the baseband preservation mode but only for the iPhone 4 and 3GS. For now Redsn0w 0.99b5 is only available for Mac but the Windows version is being tested and should be available very soon. This new Redsn0w 0.99b5 version really blurs the difference between PwnageTool and Redsn0w because baseband preservation by creating a custom iOS firmware was the key feature of the PwnageTool that was only available for Mac. For the Windows users they had to use another similar tool called Sn0wbreeze that also allows the baseband preservation by creating a custom firmware that can be restored/installed on the device in iTunes by the user. Here is explanation from the iPhone-Dev team for the new version of the Redsn0w:

The new “Custom IPSW” button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now).  Remember to NOT accidentally restore to the stock IPSW after you create the custom one!  The custom one begins with NO_BB_ (for “no baseband”).  On Mac iTunes, you select an IPSW by holding down the Option key while clicking “Restore”.

You must enter “Pwned DFU” mode before trying to use the NO_BB_ IPSW with iTunes (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5).

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use the new Redsn0w 0.99b5 to create a custom iOS 5 firmware that can be used to preserve the baseband of the iOS device while jailbreaking it on iOS 5.

Note: Rooting, Jailbreaking or customizing your device can be risky, and you may end-up bricking your device! Follow the instructions posted here at your own responsibility as InspiredGeek will not be responsible for any damage to your device.

Requirements

1) Download iOS 5 firmware for your respective device.

2) Download Redsn0w 0.99b5 For iPhone 4/3GS  for Mac (windows version is coming soon!).

Note that you must have iTunes 10.5 final version installed on your PC.

Procedure (Create Custom iOS 5 Firmware to Preserve Baseband)

Step 1) First launch theRedsn0w software on Mac (or Windows) and click the Extras button.

Step 2) Now you need to click on the Custom IPSW button to create the required custom iOS 5 firmware for your respective device to preserve the baseband. Please note that Redsn0w will create a custom firmware in the same folder where you have the stock iOS 5 firmware that you download earlier. But your custom firmware name will begin with NO_BB_ IPSW.

Step 3) After the Redsn0w finishes the custom firmware creation then you need to prepare the device for the installation of this custom firmware to preserve the baseband. For that open Redsn0w again and then from Extras select Pwned DFU mode which essentially puts iPhone in DFU mode.

Step 4) After you enter the DFU mode now launch the iTunes and navigate to the iPhone tab and press SHIFT (Option on Mac) and then with the SHIFT (Option on Mac) pressed click on the on the “Restore” button. Now a new dialog will popup from this navigate to the place where the custom iOS 5 firmware that we created in the previous step is stored and then Select it. Be careful you need to select the custom iOS 5 firmware that cooked using the Redsn0w that start with “NO_BB”!

Step 5) After selecting the new custom firmware selected iTunes will begin installing the iOS 5 but with the important feature that the old baseband will be preserved. This can be helpful if you latter decides to unlock your iPhone using a tool like ultrasn0w. For now the ultrasn0w has not been updated for the iOS 5 but a new version is expected to be released today or tomorrow. So stay tuned for the guide on unlocking your iPhone 4/3GS after upgrading and jailbreaking using the baseband preservation method outlined here.
