How to Manage Your 5 GB Free iCloud Storage in iOS 5 [Prevent Apps From Backup to iCloud]

By now, I am sure many iOS 5 users that are utilizing the iCloud features might have realized that its pretty difficult to backup all of your iOS data in the small 5GB of storage that is provided by Apple for a free iCloud account. This space quickly starts to fill up if you have big size apps or games are installed. But what to do about it ? One of the ways is to ditch the iCloud and go with the more “open” solution for the cloud service. As we mentioned recently, you can get the Box.net 50 GB cloud storage space for free! Hurry up if you didn’t get the account already with them as this offer is for limited time as they were forced to combat with the Apple iCloud service and to lure customers by offering the service for free for a limited time. Also Box.net solution will work with some third party applications such as Google Docs. There is already an app available for the Box.Net for the iOS  and has recently been updated with the iOS 5 compatibility and Airplay feature.

Now if you are a true Apple fan and don’t want to leave iCloud, first thing you need to do is to go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > This Phone. And from there toggle off the apps for which you don’t need to back the data to iCloud service. Some games and iPhone apps generate a lot of data and they will fill up your 5GB free storage space quota pretty quickly. So, just disable them from here and there data will not be backed up in the cloud. By default, it seems that iOS 5 tries to back data for ALL the apps to the iCloud and this is the only way to prevent this.
