We have been waiting for this for quite some time – a proper unlock solution for the iPhone 4/3GS on iOS 5. And here it is as iPhone Dev-Team has released an updated version of the Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 for unlocking the baseband of your iPhone 4/3GS that have been upgraded to the new iOS 5. Earlier version of the Ultrasn0w was not compatible with iOS 5. It should be emphasized that this is NOT a new unlock for the new basebands but only provides the unlock support for the existing baseband namely: 01.59.00 for iPhone 4 and 04.26.08 / 05.11.07 / 05.12.01 / 05.13.04 / 06.15.00 for iPhone 3GS.
Here is a guide of unlocking the iOS 5 on iPhone3GS and iPhone 4 using the Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 after jailbreaking iOS 5 either using Sn0wbreeze 2.7 (on Windows) or Redsn0w latest version (on Windows or Mac) that also allow to preserve the baseband.
iOS 5 Jailbreak Guides
If your device is not jailbroken on latest iOS 5 then please follow any one of these guides to preserve the baseband while doing so for both Windows and Mac:
I would personally prefer the first guide based on the recently released Redsn0w version to create a custom firmware. Please keep in mind that never ever upgrade your iPhone 4/3GS using the stock iOS 5 firmware as it will for sure upgrade your baseband and will likely finish future unlocking chances! Either use the Sn0wBreeze or the new Redsn0w version to create custom iOS 5 firmware that will allow to preserve the baseband when you restore it through the iTunes. It should also be mentioned that for now only a tethered jailbreak for the iOS 5 has been achieved but we can expect an untethered jailbreak solution for the iOS 5 in the near future as it has been hinted by some prominent jailbreak community members.
Special Note to Unlock For iPhone 3GS Users
Note: there’s a special “trick” that iPhone3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5. During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services. Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked! Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”. It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).
Now we move to the actual process:
Step 1: First you need to be jailbroken on iOS 5. Follow our guides to do jailbreak iOS 5 using Sn0wbreeze (on Windows) or Redsn0w (on Windows or Mac) [see links above for the guides].
Step 2: Once jailbroken on iOS 5 you need to unlock the iPhone 4/3GS using the Ultrasn0w.
- Load Cydia on your iPhone.
- Push the Manage tab at the bottom.
- Now push on the Sources.
Step 3: Now tap on the Edit and then tap on Add. Now you will get a prompt to enter a URL source (see the screenshot below). Type the http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and tap on Add Source to add this repo if you haven’t already.
Step 4: Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps. When the installation is complete search for “ultrasn0w 1.2.4” in Cydia, and install it. It will automatically unlock your iPhone so that you can use it with any carrier without any further action and you should now have a completely unlocked iPhone 4 or 3GS, running iOS 5!
