After such a long wait Google and Samsung finally released the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in a media event in Hong Kong with the retail availability expected in November. This also marks it as the first device to get the Ice Cream Sandwich love which for sure will be followed by the other popular devices. By now most us already know that Galaxy Nexus supports some impressive specs ranging from the gigantic 4.6-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, to the 1.2 GHz processor from Texas Instruments. Device also supports 1GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage NFC capability among a host of other nice features. But here we want to point out the camera that is integrated with the Galaxy Nexus – a 5 megapixel shooter that performs surprisingly well and capable of taking some beautiful stills comparable to the recently released Apple iPhone 4S and may be even beating it in some subjective tests as we will show in the sample pictures that we received from Thismynext.

Just for the reference here are the specs of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus:

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 9mm thin
  • 4.65-inch 1280 x 720-pixel Super AMOLED HD with curved glass
  • TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 32GB of built-in storage
  • 5-megapixel camera on the back, 1.3-megapixel in the front
  • 1080p HD video capture support
  • LTE/HSPA depending on carrier
  • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
  • NFC
  • 1,750 mAh battery

As you can see from the sample pictures posted below Galaxy Nexus camera looks really impressive, and in at least first sample picture comparison seems to take better photos than the iPhone 4S camera. Second picture comparison is very difficult to tell as both show very good image quality but with different image characteristics, tone and color temperature.

Now lets turn to the video department… As you might have noticed from the above listing of specs of the Galaxy Nexus that it does support 1080p video capturing capability despite having only a 5 mega pixel image sensor. And we can ensure you that it can indeed capture some amazing footage in 1080p. Want a proof? here is video that shows a clip shot on Rockaway Beach, Pacifica, California. This video was filmed with a Galaxy Nexus and includes time-lapse sequences shot with the new camera application in Android 4.0. See for yourself the video embedded below:

Wow, this camera is amazing. I can’t wait! I really want to get rid of my HTC Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt is ok…, but I want a phone I can love, not just tolerate. Hopefully it has better battery life than the Thunderbolt as well.

From a small sample from a potentially biased reviewer this by no means is accurate reporting.

The first picture comparison with the guy shows the Galaxy Nexus pretty much washing out the buildings in the background, and the indoor face picture is more of the face moving away from a light source. And also that shutter speed determines how much light is gathered.

The second one shows over-saturated yellows from the Galaxy Nexus as well as other colors, the Iphone 4s retains a natural appearancel. <- however the picture if unedited from the Nexus is better since sometimes over-saturation in pictures can make something plain looking look better.

Where's the audio for the Nexus Rockaway beach video? Was it all muffled and distorted like other Android phones? Why is the video sped up?, and if it was sped up was their any other editing involved to spruce up the video? I want to see a Galaxy Nexus recording a night concert video is I feel night concert videos is the ultimate test of a video camera.
