iOS54 | Jailbreak iOS 5 Untethered (Semi) On iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod touch [Tutorial]iPhone users have been waiting for a reliable method to jailbreak their iOS 5 device since the release of the new version of the iOS. And with the release of the iOS 5 we have also seen the updated releases of the Redsn0w that allows to jailbreak the iOS 5 devices such as iPhone 4/ 3GS. New version of the Redsn0w also allows to preserve the baseband of the iPhone 4/3GS by allowing to create a custom ipsw firmware file that a user can later restore using iTunes. Unfortunately, so far we haven’t seen the baseband preservation mode feature in the Windows version of the Redsn0w as its only available in the latest Mac version of this tool. However, windows users can still use the last release version of the Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak their iPhone 4/3GS while preserving the baseband. But unfortunately so far no matter which method you used the resulting iOS 5 jailbreak was always tethered.

Today, however there is a new Cydia tool in BigBoss repo that allows a “SemiTether” jailbreak of the iOS 5 devices. You can consider it as something in-between the tethered jailbreak and fully untethered jailbreak solution. As this “SemiTether” is meant to be used in circumstances where say you are on the go and cannot access a PC to tether boot your jailbroken iOS 5 device. This “SemiTether” will allow you to boot in to your iOS device like an untethered jail broken device and you will be able to use regular phone, messaging functions etc. However, users will not be able to use the Cydia, Safari, Mail or any jailbreak apps that are installed on the device. So, as you can see it’s a compromise but will help in those difficult and rare times when you have to reboot your device, but you are on the road, and cannot access a PC. Please note that this Cydia method for Semi-untether will not work for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S!

Step 1) Procedure is quite simple actually. First of all make sure that your device is jailbroken on the latest iOS 5. If your device is not jailbroken on latest iOS 5 then please follow any one of these guides to preserve the baseband while doing so for both Windows and Mac:

- Jailbreak & Preserve iOS 5 Baseband by Creating Custom IPSW Firmware Using Redsn0w 0.99b5 [Guide For iPhone 4/3GS]

I would personally prefer the first guide based on the recently released Redsn0w version to create a custom firmware.

Step 2) After your iPhone 4/3GS, iPad, iPod Touch is jailbreak on the iOS 5 then go Cydia app and add the http://thebigboss.org/semitethe repo to the Cydia source.

Step 3) Search for the “SemiTether” package in Cydia and install it.

Step 4) You are done. Enjoy!

Now you can boot in to your device even without tethering with a PC, however as mentioned above if you want to use the full feature-set of your jailbroken iPhone then you will have to tether boot using the Redsn0w or iBooty utility.

A full untethered jailbreak is not yet available for the iOS 5 devices but as we mentioned before that there are multiple exploits found in the iOS 5 that will for sure lead to new untethered jailbreak solution very soon, and hopefully this time iPad 2 and iPhone 4S will be supported right from the start for the untethered jailbreak.
