Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Using Redsn0w on Windows & Mac For iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch [Guide]

by Jawwad in Guides, iPad, iPhone, Mobile | 1 comment

As we mentioned some days ago that iOS 5.0.1 is now available for download for the general public. This is just a minor release as we all expected, more specifically this release fixes the battery draining issues on the iDevices (at least this is what Apple claimed!), enables multitouch gestures on original iPad 1 and some other minor fixes here & there. Good news is that iOS 5.0.1 release can also be jailbroken using the recently released redsn0w 0.9.9b8 easily. Although the jailbreak will be tethered for all iDevice except the iPhone 3GS on the old bootrom. Unfortunately, despite all the hype recently it seems the true untethered solution for the iOS 5 is still quite a bit away from the general release. All we can do is to wait and see when we will be able to get hold of the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4/4S or 3GS etc.

In the mean time follow this simple guide to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch on iOS 5.0.1. Note that this method will not work for the Apple A5 based dual-core devices – iPhone 4S and iPad 2!

Warning: Rooting, Jailbreaking or customizing your device can be risky, and you may end-up bricking your device! Follow the instructions posted here at your own responsibility as Inspired Geek will not be responsible for any damage to your device.

Now follow these instructions:

Programs required:

Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Using Redsn0w

Step 1: First download the iOS 5.0.1 firmware for your specific iDevice.

Step 2: Update to iOS 5.0.1 FW using the IPSW file you just downloaded in iTunes.

Step 3: Download the Redsn0w and save it to the desktop. Extract the Redsn0w application there in a folder on the desktop.

Step 4: Execute RedSn0w application from there that was extracted earlier.
Step 5: Once RedSn0w appears click the “Extras” button. Then in the next screen select “Select IPSW” to locate and point to the iOS 5.0.1 stock FW that is downloaded in Step 1 and open it.

Step 6: Now just select "Jailbreak", and "Install Cydia".
Step 7: Now plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button.
Step 8: RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds. Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
Step 9: RedSn0w will then do it’s processing and you will be notified when RedSn0w is done.

Enjoy! now you have a tethered jailbroken iDevice on iOS 5.0.1!

Installing Semi-tether on Your iDevice

Note that if you want to boot the device, you must use the tethered boot option in the Redsn0w for that. Alternatively you can install the semi-tether feature using the following simple procedure:

Step 1) After your iPhone 4/3GS, iPad, iPod Touch is jailbreak on the iOS 5.0.1 then go Cydia app and add the http://thebigboss.org/semitethe repo to the Cydia source.

Step 2) Search for the “SemiTether” package in Cydia and install it.

Step 3) You are done. Enjoy!

Now you can boot in to your iDevice even without tethering with a PC, however if you want to use the full feature-set of your jailbroken iPhone then you will have to tether boot using the Redsn0w or iBooty utility.
