We reported yesterday that Google has released the Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) source code (ASOP) and is now available for download. This is indeed a great news that not only means that Android device manufacturers will start moving to port the ICS to their respective smartphones and tablets, but it also implies that talented Android developer community can start working to port the Ice Cream Sandwich to community driven firmwares such as CyanogenMod and MIUI. We can expect that official firmware updates for many Android devices will take some time and may not be available before the first quarter next year but the hope is still alive for the community based firmware’s based on ASOP to kick in action and release some stable firmware updates based on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) at least for some popular Android devices such as Samsung Galaxy SII, HTC Sensation and some Motorola devices etc. before the years end.
It seems that we might very well be able to get at least the nightly builds of the CyanogenMod 9 (CM9) Nightlies Based on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) in just a couple of weeks now if the past experience is of any indication. For example, when Gingerbread ASOP was released it took just a couple of weeks for the CyanogenMod team to come up with the nightly builds of CM7. However, these nightly builds (for CM9) are likely to be missing some key pieces of the Ice Cream functionality here and there and stable release with all the key features enabled for the CyanogenMod 9 (CM9) might take about 2 months.

In the mean time, have a look at our recent articles: Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) Review of Best New Features and as well as: Some Impressive Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) Features That You Don’t Know! to get hang of what the recent ICS craze is all about! In any case, this is the time to get really excited about Ice Cream Sandwich!
