Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) source code has been available for around a month now and since then development communities for many open source firmware have already started their effort to bring the Android 4.0 support to the many current generation Android based devices. One of the most popular open source Android firmware development projects is CyanogenMod. Its not long time ago that we have seen the release of the CyanogenMod 7 for a long list of Android devices. But CM7 was based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and now we already updated you in the past about the currently very active development of the CM9 for many Android devices. Even some early preview builds are available right now to download for some popular devices such as Samsung Galaxy S.
CyanogenMod Blog mentions that for the time-being devices based on newer SoCs like OMAP4, MSM8660/7X30, and Exynos is at top priority but the support for the Tegra 2 based tablets like Galaxy Tab 10.1 is also in the queue. Goal is to have the support of CyanogenMod 9 for all the devices on which CyanogenMod 7 is supported as of now. It means that CM 9 will be able to support Android devices as old as Nexus One. Although its mentioned that very old devices like Droid1 will not be able to get the upgrade to the CyanogenMod 9! So basically for the users of the Droid 1 (or similarly old devices) it means the time to upgrade to something bigger and better!
It appears that Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has broken the drivers for many device components such as camera and graphics drivers but this issues are now being actively sorted out as of this writing. Process is also being facilitated for the advanced users who want to build the CyanogenMod 9 from the source itself.
