As mentioned in our previous guide today, untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is finally available for Apple A4 based devices, and we have already posted a step-by-step guide to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad1 and iPod Touch. But that guide is not suitable for the users that want to preserve the baseband on their phone to get a future unlock using a tool like Ultrasn0w after the jailbreak. So here is the guide to provide a step-by-step approach to get Untethered Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 & Preserve Baseband On iPhone 4/3GS, iPhone 4 CDMA Using Redsn0w 0.9.10b1. This guide is valid for both Windows and Mac. This is because in the more recent versions of the Redsn0w iPhone Dev-Team has integrated the baseband preservation functionality and hence technically this functionality is almost same that users got on PwnageTool. But PwnageTool was and still is ONLY available for Mac. And Windows users earlier had to use the Sn0wbreeze tool get the same functionality. But no more!
For now Redsn0w can be used to get fully untethered jailbreak for all Apple A4 based devices ONLY. That’s the reason that recently released iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are NOT mentioned above in this list of supported devices that can get untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1. Current version of the Redsn0w will only work with the iOS 5.0.1 and NOT iOS 5.0 which should be supported in a future Redsn0w version.
Follow this simple guide to jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.0.1 while preserving the baseband of the device. Note that this method will not work for the more recent Apple A5 based dual-core devices –iPhone 4S and iPad 2!
Warning: Rooting, Jailbreaking or customizing your device can be risky, and you may end-up bricking your device! Follow the instructions posted here at your own responsibility as Inspired Geek will not be responsible for any damage to your device.
Now follow these instructions:
- Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 (Windows/Mac).

Step 1: Download the Redsn0w and save it to the desktop. Extract the Redsn0w application there in a folder on the desktop.
Step 2: Execute RedSn0w application from the folder where it was extracted earlier.
Step 3: Once RedSn0w appears on-screen click the “Extras” button.
Step 4: Click on the “Custom IPSW” on the Next screen.
Step 5: Now in the Open dialogue navigate to the Desktop where you have saved the stock firmware that you downloaded earlier and click on the Open button.
Step 6: RedSn0w will now prepare the custom firmware for your specific iDevice. Please note that Redsn0w will create a custom firmware in the same folder where you have the stock iOS 5 firmware that you download earlier. But your custom firmware name will begin with NO_BB_ IPSW.
Step 7: You will be notified when the custom IPSW firmware is ready. Click OK on the notification dialogue that appears.
Step 8: Now click on the “Pwned DFU” button from the Extras menu.
Step 9: Make sure that your device is powered-off and connect it to your computer before proceeding any further.

Step 11: Redsn0w will now run the LimeRa1n exploit.
Step 12: You will be notified when phone enters the Pwned DFU mode. In this mode your iDevice can accept custom firmware installation from iTunes.
Step 13: After your device enters the Pwned DFU mode now launch the iTunes and navigate to the iPhone tab and press SHIFT (Option on Mac) and then with the SHIFT (Option on Mac) pressed click on the on the “Restore” button. Now a new dialog will popup from this navigate to the place where the custom iOS 5.0.1 firmware that we created in the previous step is stored and then Select it. Be careful you need to select the custom iOS 5 firmware that was cooked using the Redsn0w and starts with “NO_BB”!
Step 14: After selecting the new custom firmware iTunes will begin installing/restoring the iOS 5.0.1 but with the critical feature that the old baseband will be preserved.
Step 15: Congrats. You have jailbroken your iPhone 4, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.0.1 while preserving the baseband of the device.
